The tools

Three small helpers. Each with one job.

Three free tools, in plain words.

Battery HUD

See the time left

A small floating battery overlay plus a thin bar along the top of your screen. It shows how long your battery should last, or how long until it is full, and how much power your laptop is drawing right now. It only reads; it does not change settings.

What's inside

  • Round overlay card you can drag and resize
  • Thin strip docked to the top or bottom of a screen
  • Time left, watts, battery level and the 15% mark
  • Shows whether the dedicated graphics are on or off
  • Tray icon with show, hide and lock options

GPU Switch

Choose your graphics

Switch an app between the built-in (integrated) graphics, which save battery, and the dedicated graphics card, which is faster. It also comes with a graphics master switch that turns the dedicated card fully off, or back on, for laptops with an NVIDIA RTX card.

What's inside

  • Per-app choice: built-in only, dedicated only, or let the system decide
  • Add any program you like to the list
  • Graphics master switch: dedicated card off or on (asks for a Yes prompt each time; it sits in the Power Switch window, which ships in the same package)
  • Plain undo steps in the README

Power Switch

One-click power modes

One click to move your laptop between full speed and battery-sipping. It changes settings of your current power plan for you, so you do not have to dig through menus.

What's inside

  • Full Blast: no processor limit, screen and sleep stay on
  • Sipper: lower processor limit, dimmer screen, quicker sleep
  • One-click return to your original plan, plus a 99% processor cap
  • Shows your active plan and current values

More apps coming

More small tools are in the workshop. Windows only for now. A Mac version is planned, with no date and no promises. Insider Track hears first.

Before you turn the graphics card off

Check your laptop first

Most laptops with an NVIDIA card show the picture through the processor's built-in graphics. On those, turning the NVIDIA card off is usually fine for the built-in screen. But some laptops send the screen, or the HDMI and USB-C ports, straight through the NVIDIA card. On those, turning the card off can leave you with a black screen. The table below shows what makers and laptop owners say about common brands. Look up your laptop, then check it yourself with the three steps underneath.

Alienware owners: please be careful. Owners and Dell community helpers report that some Alienware models wire the built-in screen directly to the NVIDIA card. Newer models let you pick "discrete only" in the BIOS or in Alienware Command Center. If your Alienware runs on the NVIDIA card only, do not use the graphics master switch (in the Power Switch window).

How to check your own laptop

I

Device Manager

  • Press Windows key + X, then choose Device Manager.
  • Open "Display adapters". Two entries (for example Intel or AMD plus NVIDIA) means you have switchable graphics.
  • Only an NVIDIA entry means the NVIDIA card is your only display card. Do not turn it off.
  • A small down arrow on an entry means it is already turned off.

II

NVIDIA Control Panel

  • Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Open "Configure Surround, PhysX". The diagram shows which card each screen is connected to. If your screen sits under NVIDIA, it runs on NVIDIA.
  • If you see "Manage Display Mode", it should not be set to "NVIDIA GPU only".

III

Your maker's graphics mode

  • Dell / Alienware: BIOS (F2) "Enable Hybrid Graphics / Advanced Optimus" should be ON. In Alienware Command Center, the MUX Switch should be OFF.
  • ASUS: Armoury Crate GPU Mode not set to Ultimate. Lenovo: Vantage not in dGPU mode. MSI: GPU Switch not Discrete. HP: Graphics Switcher not Discrete. Acer: not Discrete GPU only. Razer: not NVIDIA GPU only.

If your screen goes dark. Before it turns the card off, the graphics master switch in the Power Switch window shows a warning in red bold text (Cancel is the default). If you go ahead, the helper turns the card back on automatically after 2 minutes unless you press KEEP OFF, so if a screen goes dark, wait 2 minutes and it should come back. If the laptop freezes or the screen stays dark, restart the laptop, turn the card back on in Device Manager, or change the graphics mode in your laptop's BIOS. The README in the download walks through the restart and Device Manager steps. If your laptop is on the Flag list, or the checks above say the NVIDIA card drives your screen, please do not use the switch.

Report your laptop. Tried it on a laptop not listed here, or found a mistake? Email the exact model and what happened to [email protected].

This table is a summary of community reports and vendor pages, with links so you can read them yourself. It is not a guarantee about any laptop, and it is not legal advice. Laptops of the same name can be built differently, and BIOS updates can change settings. Your own checks above beat any list.

Terms of Use

Read this first. It limits your rights.

Pocketwatch Terms of Use, Risk Waiver, Liability Waiver and Hold Harmless Agreement

Version: PW-TERMS-v1 (effective October 28, 2026).

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY. IT LIMITS YOUR RIGHTS. If you do not agree with every part of it, do not request, install, open or use the software.

1. WHO AND WHAT THIS COVERS

"Software" means the free Pocketwatch tools (including Battery HUD, GPU Switch and Power Switch), every file, script and instruction that comes with them, any later version, and any information on the Pocketwatch page or in Pocketwatch emails. "Publisher" means Allen Wu, EthicalAI (also written Ethical AI). "Released Parties" means the Publisher, and the creator, developer, owner and publisher of the Software, and each of their affiliates, companies, officers, members, employees, contractors, agents, successors, assigns, heirs and personal representatives. "You" means the person who requests, installs or uses the Software.

2. 100% FREE. NO OBLIGATION.

The Software is 100% free. Nothing is sold. No payment is asked for or accepted. No support relationship, service agreement or duty of care is created by giving it to you.

3. PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE". NO WARRANTY.

The Software is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE", with all faults and without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Released Parties disclaim all warranties, express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, accuracy, quiet enjoyment, and any warranty arising from a course of dealing or usage of trade. No one promises that the Software will work on your device, work correctly, be error-free, be secure, be compatible with your hardware, drivers or other software, or that any reading it shows (such as battery time, watts or graphics status) is accurate. No advice or information, written or spoken, creates any warranty.

4. YOU USE IT ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK. ASSUMPTION OF RISK.

You decide, alone, whether to use the Software. You use it entirely at your own risk. You knowingly and voluntarily assume every risk, known and unknown, of using it, including the specific risks listed below, even if a risk is caused in part by the negligence of a Released Party, to the fullest extent the law allows.

5. SPECIFIC RISKS YOU ACCEPT

(a) Graphics switching and the graphics master switch. GPU Switch changes which graphics processor an app uses. The graphics master switch turns the dedicated graphics card (for example an NVIDIA RTX card) completely off in Windows Device Manager, or back on. This can cause a black or blank screen, loss of display, loss of signal on external monitors (many laptops wire external ports to the dedicated card), apps or games that stop opening or run slowly, crashes, driver errors, worse battery life instead of better, system instability, and the need for recovery steps such as Device Manager, a restart, Safe Mode, a driver reinstall, or professional repair.

(b) Power plan and settings changes. Power Switch changes settings of your current Windows power plan (processor limits, boost, sleep and screen timers, wireless power saving, brightness). GPU Switch writes per-app graphics choices to your Windows user settings (registry). These changes can affect speed, heat, fan noise, battery life, charging behavior and stability. A "previous" mode tries to put back settings it saved before its first change; it may not restore every setting, so write down your settings first.

(c) Overlays. Battery HUD draws an overlay and a screen-edge strip on top of other windows. It can cover content, interfere with full-screen apps, games, screen sharing or recordings, and show estimates that are wrong.

(d) Unsigned software and security warnings. The Software is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen, your browser, or your antivirus may warn about it, block it, quarantine it, or flag it (including false positives). Choosing to run it anyway is your decision.

(e) Elevated rights. Some features ask for administrator rights through a Windows "Yes" (User Account Control) prompt. Approving that prompt lets the Software change device settings for the whole computer.

(f) Third-party and system changes. Windows updates, driver updates, manufacturer utilities, security tools, company IT policies, or other software may conflict with the Software, undo its changes, or behave unpredictably with it. The Released Parties do not control any of these.

(g) Data and hardware. Any crash, forced restart or display loss can cause lost work, lost or corrupted data, or damage. Hardware warranties, manufacturer support, or employer rules may be affected by changing device settings.

6. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

You alone are responsible for: deciding whether to use the Software; reading these terms and the README first; backing up your data, files and settings before use; noting your current power and graphics settings so you can put them back; your hardware, drivers, operating system and data; checking that you are allowed to change the device (for example a work or school laptop); and any recovery, repair or replacement. Do not use the Software on any device where a failure could cause injury, safety risk, or loss of critical work, including medical, safety, vehicle, industrial or production systems.

7. RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release, waive, discharge and promise not to sue the Released Parties for any and all claims, demands, losses, damages, costs and liability of any kind, known or unknown, that arise from or relate to the Software or your use of it or inability to use it, including claims based on negligence, strict liability, product liability, breach of warranty, or any other legal theory.

8. HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNITY

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any claim, demand, loss, damage, liability, cost or expense (including reasonable attorneys' fees) brought by you or by any third party that arises from or relates to your use of the Software, your device, your breach of these terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right.

9. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will any Released Party be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for loss of data, loss of use, loss of profits, loss of business, cost of replacement hardware or software, or repair costs, however caused and under any theory of liability, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. If any liability is found despite these terms, the total liability of all Released Parties combined will not exceed zero U.S. dollars (US$0.00) or, where a minimum amount is required by law, the smallest amount the law allows. You agree this allocation of risk is fair because the Software is free.

10. NO SUPPORT. NO UPDATES. MAY BE WITHDRAWN.

No support, maintenance, fixes, updates or response to questions is promised. The Software, the Pocketwatch page and these terms may be changed, paused or withdrawn at any time without notice. Replies to feedback are a courtesy, not an obligation.

11. NOT AFFILIATED

The Software is independent. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by NVIDIA, Intel, Microsoft, or any laptop or hardware maker. Product names are used only to describe compatibility and belong to their owners. "Pocketwatch" is a working product name and is not claimed as a registered trademark.

12. LICENSE AND OWNERSHIP

Publisher: Allen Wu, EthicalAI. Copyright (c) 2026 Allen Wu, EthicalAI. All rights reserved. You may use the Software free of charge for your own personal or internal use, as provided. You may not sell, resell, redistribute, sublicense, modify, or reverse engineer it without written permission.

13. AGE AND AUTHORITY

You confirm that you are at least 18 years old, that you have the legal capacity to agree to these terms, and that you own the device or have authority to change its settings.

14. GOVERNING LAW AND VENUE

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought only in the state or federal courts located in Collin County, Texas, and you consent to their jurisdiction and venue.

15. SEVERABILITY AND ENTIRE AGREEMENT

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, that part will be limited or removed only to the minimum extent necessary, and the rest stays in full force. Where the law does not allow a waiver or limitation (for example of certain consumer rights, or of liability for gross negligence or willful misconduct), the waiver or limitation applies to the greatest extent the law does allow. No failure to enforce a term is a waiver of it. These terms are the entire agreement about the Software.

16. YOUR AGREEMENT

By ticking the agreement box, or by installing, opening or using the Software, you confirm that you have read these terms, understand them, are giving up substantial rights, and agree to them voluntarily.

Questions

Straight answers

Is anything paid?

No. The tools are $0. Insider Track is $0. There is no paid step and nothing to buy here.

Why is there no button to get the files here?

Because we want you to read the terms first. Once you request the tools and agree to the terms, the files and the undo steps arrive together by email.

Will my laptop warn me about them?

Probably. The tools are not code-signed, so the built-in SmartScreen check or your antivirus may warn you the first time. The email explains the safe steps. If you are unsure, do not run them.

Can I undo the changes?

Yes, in most cases. Battery HUD only reads. For GPU Switch and Power Switch, the README and the email list the undo steps: put apps back to "let the system decide," turn the dedicated graphics back on in Device Manager, and restore your power plan defaults. Read the terms: you use the tools at your own risk.

Do the tools send my data anywhere?

No. The tools contain no code that connects to the internet. The form on this page collects your name, email, mobile and answers so we can send the files and Insider Track notes.

Is there a Mac version?

Not yet. Pocketwatch is for Windows 10 and 11 laptops for now. A Mac version is planned, with no date and no promises.

Who makes this?
