What actually moves a Google Maps ranking in 2026
Google still describes Maps ranking as proximity, relevance, and prominence. The useful version for a shop: how close you are, whether you do that job, and whether the web agrees you are real.
Proximity
You cannot fake the pin. A service-area business should not invent a street in a city it wants to rank. Use the real address or a honest service-area setup. See matching name, address, and phone.
Relevance
Category, website H1, and the words on the invoice should be the same trade. If the site says “full service solutions” and the search is “AC repair Frisco,” you lose to the shop that named the job.
Prominence
- Reviews from finished jobs, replied to. How to request them.
- Listings that copy one NAP. Why 40 to 200 listings help.
- A site that loads and names the trade. On-page checklist.
What does not move the pin
- Another blog post about “AI taking over search” with no local proof.
- Buying reviews.
- A second Google profile “to test” a city.
