One Maps category for a North Texas trade truck

Pick one Maps category, not a pile of every trade

September 23, 2026

The primary category on your Maps profile is the job you want the phone to ring for. One category. A plumber who also lists roofer, electrician, and garage door looks like a pile, and the extras get trimmed.

This is for owners who already roll a truck in North Texas. It is not a ranking promise. It is the order of work.

Pick the job you actually invoice

Read the primary category out loud. If it is not the phrase a homeowner types when the unit fails, change it. An HVAC crew is not a general contractor. A garage-door crew is not a handyman. Use the closest real category for the work on this month’s invoices.

Extra categories are not a keyword list

  • Add a second category only when that trade is a real crew you sell every month.
  • Do not add a category to catch a city you do not drive.
  • Do not stack every license you once held.
  • If the category has no matching service on the site, remove it.

A thin profile with the right primary category beats a stuffed one. Spammy extras do not buy the call.

Make the site say the same job

The homepage and the profile category should name the same trade. City pages only where the trucks already go. A roofing category on a site that never shows a roof is how the listing and the site disagree.

Same local pattern on one trade: Garage Door SEO in Dallas–Fort Worth. The longer profile pass: Google Business Profile checklist for HVAC and trade shops.

What not to do this week

  • Do not buy a pack of categories.
  • Do not change the primary category every Monday to chase a trend.
  • Do not promise page one because the category word is exact.

Order of work

  1. Name the one job you want.
  2. Set that as the primary category.
  3. Delete extras you do not invoice.
  4. Match the homepage and the services list to that word.
  5. Then decide whether ads are even needed.

Same method on any model you already have. Don’t have one of those? No problem. The work is the category and the pages, not the chatbot.
